Description: Hastings, the only son of Baron Francis Hastings and Lady Sarah Harrington was born at Ashby de la Zouch. He was a prominent English nobleman and literary patron, succeeding his grandfather in 1604, George Hastings, to the Earldom of Huntingdon due to the death his father in 1595.
He commandeered the suppression of the Midlands Revolt in 1607.
He served a wide range of offices throughout Leicestershire, Rutland and Lancashire, including Lord Lieutenant of Leicester and Rutland, 1614û42.
Married Lady Elizabeth Stanley (see DCHQ200551 and DCHQ200599) in in 1601. Their principal home was Ashby de la Zouch Castle in Leicestershire. They had four children: Lady Alice Hastings (1606û1667), married Sir Gervase Clinton; died childless; Ferdinando Hastings, 6th Earl of Huntingdon (1608- 1655), married Lucy Davis; Lord Henry Hastings, 1st Baron Loughborough of Loughborough (1610- 1667); died unmarried without children and Lady Elizabeth Hastings (born c.1605), married Sir Hugh Calverley; died childless.
This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
