Description: English nobleman; the eldest son of John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland and Catherine Russell. Styled Marquess of Granby from 1711, he succeeded to the title in 1721, cutting short a brief career in the House of Commons, where he had represented Rutland as a Whig.
Married Bridget Sutton in 1717, the heiress of Robert Sutton, 2nd Baron Lexinton. The surviving children of the eleven born to them were: Lady Frances and Lady Bridget Manners (twins), John Manners (see DCHQ200497), Lord Robert Manners-Sutton, Lord George Manners-Sutton and Lord Frederick Manners
This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
