Description: This image appeared as part of an advertisement for the publication 'Illustrative of the History and Antiquities of the Town of Derby' published by Stephen Glover of Market Place, Wirksworth (see image DCHQ200329).
This is a view of the east end of St Mary's Chapel (St Mary-on-the Bridge), the oldest chapel in Derby and one of only six such 'bridge' chapels remaining in the country. These chapels were built to provide revenue by the collection of tolls from those persons who wished to cross the bridge as well as providing a place for people travelling to pray for safe journeys. See DCHQ200330 for just this image.
This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
