Description: Handwritten next to the image is a report taken from the Gazette:
"Cornelius Heathcote Rodes Esq. died at Barlborough 6 March 1825 aged 70 and was succeeded by his nephew (his sister's son) the Reverend Cornelius Heathcote Reaston, who 20 April 1825, had the royal license to assume the surname of Rodes, in addition to and after that of Reaston; and also to bear arms of Rodes, quarterly, in the first quarter, with his paternal arms."
The Hall, a Grade 1 listed building, was built in 1583 by Francis Rodes and retains much of its original character. It was later adapted as a school in the 1830s. Thos. Whitworth Green is listed as master there in White's Directory of 1835. The school began as the junior school to Mount St. Mary's College, founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
