Description: Adam Clarke was a Methodist theologian and Biblical scholar. He is chiefly remembered for writing a commentary on the Bible which took him 40 years to complete and which was a primary Methodist theological resource for two centuries.
Clarke was born at Moybeg in the parish of Kilcronaghan, co. Londonderry, the son of a schoolmaster, and was educated at Kingswood School near Bristol. He was appointed to his first Methodist circuit at Bradford, Wiltshire, in 1782, and served as a Methodist minister in several areas of the country. He was President of the Wesleyan Conference in 1806, 1814 and 1822.

This image is one of a collection by the famous local antiquarian, Thomas Bateman, of Middleton by Youlgreave. (1821-1861). Bateman organized his collection by inserting them into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, well known local historian, who died in December 2006.
