Joseph Wright of Derby

He was born in Irongate, Derby to a family of respected lawyers. Amongst his paintings are series that explored the struggle between science and religion during the age of alchemy. He was also credited as the first professional painter to express the spirit of the industrial revolution. Many of his paintings are now owned by Derby City Council.
