Description: Looking south-west along the River Maun upstream of the Bath Lane/Sandy Lane crossing with Stanton Mill in the background. This view is said to have been taken at the time of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
The River Maun rises near Kirkby in Ashfield and flows north-eastwards through Mansfield and thence via Edwinstowe and Ollerton to combine with the River Meden near Gamston, just to the south of Retford. The amalgamated rivers then form the River Idle, which eventually empties into the Trent at West Stockwith.
The Maun was an important source of water power for Mansfield and Stanton (or Stanton's) Mill was one of many erected along its course in the vicinity of the town. Dating from 1795, it was used for cotton doubling until the 1890s, but was then given over to boot and shoe manufacture. The building survives today and was listed Grade II in 1994.
