Description: Picture the Past website contributor Ron Metcalf comments:
'The original coachbuilding business was established in 1893 by Thomas Metcalf. Later, with the advent of the motor car a customer would provide the chassis of his choice and the firm would then build a car body to suit.
In addition, I believe they built the first charabanc or bus for a Brimington company (Doughtie's perhaps) and at one time there was also a short length of track on which Chesterfield's horse-drawn trams were repaired.
Perhaps the last major renovation of a carriage was on behalf of the then Duchess of Devonshire for the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. I am the grandson of Thomas Metcalf and a photograph of the coach in the works yard hangs in our hallway in Vancouver, Canada.'
