Description: Note the turntable in the foreground for turning locomotive around to face the opposite direction. The 2 slim, vertical, metal structures either side of the tall, shed-yard light in front of the main building: these are water columns, where engines would take on water. During a visit here in July 1965, the steam locomotives present were: heavy-freight classes 'O1', 'O4/6' (variant 6), 'O4/8', 'Austerity', British Railways Standard Class '9F' and, here rostered for use on the less arduous freight-trains, 'Ivatt 4MT' mixed-traffic type. (Not all these engines were based at Staveley: one '9F' came from Immingham (Lincs.); a Langwith (Derbys.) O4 was also present).
