Description: This photograph and DCHQ005382 were taken in the yard of the Drill Hall (later the Goldwell Rooms), Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, as can be deduced from the partial appearance of the Central School in the background. Pictured are back row: Whitworth, Sam Hardy, Tom White and Townhill; front row: Whileman, Wilson and Harry Holmes. The uniforms are pre World War I - and the men are possibly pre 1908 volunteers. The uniforms and badges are unusual and they are definitely not Home Guard. No one has medals and there is only one with insignia of rank. The Volunteers were merged with the militia etc. in 1907 to form the Territorials - hence the 'pre 1908'. The earliest it could have been taken is 1902, otherwise the Central School would not appear in the background. Does anyone recognise more of the men?
