Description: Steetley Chapel is a Grade I listed buiding within the parish of Whitwell. It was built in the mid 12th century, and is 52 ft long and 15 ft wide and is tri-cellular - nave, chancel and apsed sanctuary. Pevsner suggests that as the chapel is lavishly decorated it must have a special purpose, possibly connected with the manor, though there is no manorial evidence to support this. The nave and chancel of the chapel were roofless right through the 19th century, until restoration work took place in 1876-80 under J Pearson.
