Description: Superstition held that the fall of a branch foretold a death in the owner of Bretby Hall's family, as when the Earl of Carnarvon (of Tutankhamun fame) died in Egypt in 1923. The present hall was built in the early 19th century by the 5th Earl of Chesterfield, on the site of his family's 17th century manor. The house was left unfinished at the Earl's death in 1815.
