Description: The silk making up the State Bed at Calke Abbey was woven in China around 1700 and was used in furnishing the bed for King George I c 1715. The bed was given by Princess Anne (the daughter of George II) to her Lady in Waiting, Lady Caroline Manners on her marriage to Sir Henry Harpur, 5th Baronet in 1734. In fact, the bed was never erected and remained hidden away until the National Trust took over Calke Abbey some 250 years later.
