Description: Showing Mr Ward in the centre. The Lucas Iron Foundry was established by Samuel Lucas in 1790, and was bought by his brother, Edward, after his death in c 1822. The foundry produced spindles and fliers for the machinery of the fast expanding cotton trade, which were shipped to all over the country. Lucas's also made gardening, agricultural tools and railway wheels and tracks, and is even said to have made cannon balls for the Napoleonic Wars.
