Description: These carriages were used in quarrying and the transport of limestone. The Prestwich family built Gosforth foundry. Although largely obscure, painted on the lower right-hand side of the wagon is a Welsh placename - BLAENAVON on the former London and North Western Railway in South Wales'; the L.M.S. Co. was formed in 1923, therefore this photograph must have been taken after this year). The L.M.S. owned railways in North (and Central?) Wales. Railway wagons owned by companies transporting freight in their own waggons which were dedicated to a particular traffic, as is the case here, sometimes had to be returned empty to a particular location. Possibly Prestwich sourced stone from a quarry near the placename shown?
