Description: A grade II listed building, built in 1712 on the site of an existing tudor timber-framed house. It has a symmetrical front with a middle gable all in stone, with mullioned and crossed windows, of a style quite outdated at the time it was built. It only had three main rooms on the ground floor, but had the luxury of en-suite wig powdering rooms! It was built for a lead merchant called Richard Hall, and was later the property of the Dukes of Newcastle, then The Craven-Smith-Milnes of Winkburn, Nottinghamshire. From 1888 it was occupied by the Rhodes family, local colliery owners. It was re-roofed in the 1980's because of a collapsing roof ridge beam (note the sag between the chimneys). See DCNE000266 for a picture of the Owner, Mr Geoffrey Rhodes
