Description: St Alkmund's Church dates from 1846 and was demolished in 1967 to make way for the inner ring road. Pevsner says 'It was an ambitious building marking the beginning of Victorian prosperity. Ashlar stone slightly rock-tooled, tall nave with openwork balustrade, aisles, tall 14th century-looking piers inside, tall tower with spire supported by flying buttresses.
It stood on a Saxon site. The oldest building found beneath in 1968 consisted of a nave with a smaller E annexe and similar annexes to N and S and suggested a date not later than the 9th century. The church was extended to the E in the 12th century. S aisle widened and N aisle remodelled in the late 13th century or early 14th century and extended to the W in the 15th century. A 9th century sarcophagus, believed to be the tomb of St Alkmund, was found.'
