Description: Image taken from inside the Monkey Hole, a deep dark hole with almost vertical sides, only entered through a narrow cleft in the quarry side. The bridge along the top originally enabled heavy loads to be moved to and from Rise End. The name 'Monkey Hole' appears to originate from a story about an Italian organ grinder who used to entertain the men working in the quarry by dangling a monkey from a rope to perform tricks, until the rope broke one day and the monkey fell and died. The Monkey Hole was later used as a testing station for the effects of wind pressure on tall structures such as pylons and masts.
