Description: Wilne Mills produced cotton and this view is taken from the south bank of the River Derwent (here running from left to right) looking north towards the weir on a rather gloomy winter's day. The principal mill buildings at Wilne were destroyed by fire in 1917 but were rebuilt in a different form and these continued in use after the end of cotton manufacture for the production of pyrotechnics and munitions. This led to infilling of the millstream (itself adapted from an earlier course of the Derwent) so the weir seen here, together with its outflow into the river, no longer exist.
This photo was taken by Derby-based postcard publisher F W Scarratt and is thought to have been numbered 602 in his series.
