Description: High Street looking north-west. The large building on the left was a hosiery factory belonging to I & R Morley and dated from 1874. Opposite is a post office, its presence advertised on the glass of the gas lamp standing in front. All the buildings seen in this view have since been demolished, mainly to make room for a large traffic island.
The photographer, Derby-based postcard producer F W Scarratt, has positioned his wife Mary in the doorway of the post office, while the girl on the left is believed to be his youngest daughter Annie.
This view has previously been dated as 1913 but there is no sign in the road surface of the rails laid by the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramways Company, which opened its electric tramway between Loscoe and Kimberley in July of that year, so it is probably slightly earlier.
Image numbered in F W Scarratt's own series as No 724.
