Description: A crowded Edwardian scene in Victoria Park, Ilkeston. Although the original caption for this image describes it as "school children", there are actually more adults present than children and most appear to have gathered to watch some event in the background that is not visible. What can be discerned is a raised structure on which are standing three men or boys but its purpose is not readily apparent. Victoria Park originated when the 7th Duke of Rutland presented to the town eight acres of ground to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Its official opening took place on 20 August 1902, the Park being laid out with trees, shrubs and flower beds for "walking, sitting and gentle recreation". While this photo depicts Ilkeston folk enjoying their leisure time, a reminder of the working week creeps into the picture in the far left distance in the shape of the chimney and headstocks of Manners Colliery.
