Description: The official title of the viaduct is Headstone Viaduct.
The locomotive is an ex Midland Railway 3F 0-6-0 carrying its BR number 43429.
The loco is no doubt heading back, light-engine, to its home depot of Rowsley after a æbanking turnÆ, assisting a northbound freight train to either Peak Forest, or to BibbingtonÆs Sidings on the former LNWR line north of Buxton.
Every northbound freight train from Rowsley with more than 26 wagons that were not fitted with continuous automatic brakes required a æbanker.ÆThe banking loco fulfilled two duties, it was always at the rear of the train, so that it could both provide assistance by pushing the train to the summit, but more importantly, if a coupling broke and the train became divided, it would prevent the rear part of the train from running back down the incline uncontrolled.
