Description: Studio portrait of Martin Gallon in WWI soldier's uniform. The photograph is interesting because Martin signed up when he was underage. His mother found out in time and went down to the recruiting office and got him out - she was a working class woman with 'colourful' language! Martin may well have been especially motivated because his father was German. They lived on Blue Bell Hill in St. Ann's, where anti-German feeling resulted in abuse and broken windows. He later joined the Royal Navy.
