Description: The steam rail crane in the photo is RS1057/10.
This 10 ton capacity heavy duty steam rail crane was built by Taylor & Hubbard Ltd in Leicester (makerÆs number 1694) in 1955 for use by the Chief Civil EngineerÆs Department of British Railways. It was used on the Southern Region where it later carried the number DS57. These engineerÆs steam rail cranes were phased out by BR in the 1980s and DS57 was purchased for use at the Midland Railway Centre where it arrived in September 1982 from Eastleigh in Hants. It was restored to use at the MRC in grey livery numbered RS1057/10. This crane was later sold and moved the short distance to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway at Wirksworth in 2002.
