Description: Butterley Ironworks, founded in 1792, was responsible for the erection of many important structures including the steel viaduct at Millers Dale. In its heyday, the viaduct would have carried rail traffic between such widely spaced locations as Liverpool and London, now it carries pedestrian traffic only along the Monsal Trail. The road alongside the river (River Wye), is now the B6049 between Tideswell and Buxton.
