Description: This picture was taken on polling day, 20 June 1907, for County Council elections to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr Job Smith, J P. The result - the triumphant return of Mr Marsden-Smedley (738 votes -a majority of 156) and defeat for Mr R Yelverton Fairbairn (582 votes). Mr Marsden-Smith stood as a non-political candidate, his opponent as a Liberal, with the whole of the Liberal organisation at his back. Mr Smedley's greater delight on polling day was to take to the poll Matlock's oldest inhabitant, Mr Thomas Green, who was celebrating his 95th Birthday that day. Here Mr Smedley is pictured driving Mr Green to the polling station.
