Description: A section of the ex. Melbourne Military Railway, as seen through the lens of 16 year old Marina Lakin now (Meakin), in rural peacetime. The picture is looking from Trent Lane Kings Newton towards Melbourne. Note the crossover just beyond the bridge which gained access to 19 military sidings which were laid by the ROYAL ENGINEERS of the Melbourne Military Railway at the start of the second world war. A platelayers hut can be seen to the right of the picture just prior to the bridge within the embankment, remnants which can still be seen to this day. Note the military remnants to the right of the 'UP' line. This was once the site of the massive Transportation Stores Depot of the ROYAL ENGINEERS during the 1939-45, war years. It was also used to store oil during the Suez crises of the 1960s'and more recently used as a caravan park and storage site by contractors such as Balfour Beatty Ltd. To the right of the (Down Line) was an American military camp. The Down line was lifted first during the 1960's, whilst the Up line to the right of the picture was finally lifted in the 1980's, and is now route 6 of SUSTRANS National Cycle Track Network. This section of double line working became a quite rural freight line after the war years and was seen as a shortcut by some Melbourne residents to the River Trent when in summer months they would walk the line to gain access to the nearby river Trent, a popular venue for picnics, sunbathing, and swimming, one such resident was your photographer (then 16 year old) Marina Lakin, who lovingly photographed the scenes with her brownie box camera to record her happy memories.
