Description: For this photograph we again have Marina Lakin (now Meakin) to thank, for as a 16 year old teenager she took many photographs with her Brownie Box camera, of an area she loved. This shot of Trent Lane Kings Newton in south Derbyshire shows the peace that nature can bring as opposed to the traumatic war years five years earlier. Just beyond here on the Down line(nearest the camera) a crossover commenced giving access to 19 military sidings to the left of the 'UP' line spanning Robey's meadows terminating with awesome concrete military buffer stops just short of Station Road Melbourne. Not far from where the photographer is standing is a platelayers hut within the embankment which can be seen immediately to the extreme left of the picture, and just beyond is Trent Lane bridge. During the war years this tranquil rural setting was the heart of a military establishment, namely:- The Melbourne Military Railway who's Royal Engineers personnel served in both Bridge Building and Railway Operations on both sides of Trent Lane bridge. Ex. soldiers of the regiment, who served here during the second world war, still live in Kings Newton and Melbourne today. Sam Ernill is one such resident of The Limes, Main Street, Kings Newton, who served as a sergeant on The Melbourne Military Railway with The Royal Engineers and was stationed at north camp Weston-on-Trent which is north of the River Trent. Another resident was Mr S.K.Bicklin of Haywoods, 46 Penn Lane, Melbourne, who served with the military at the Kings Newton site. The site of the massive Transportation Stores Depot of the military establishment can just be seen on the other side of Trent Lane bridge.
