Description: This photograph was originally captioned 'Steam Train at Carr Vale Station', but the crowds gathered to look at it indicated that it was a special train, so further research on the web site revealed that the number 4472 on the front of the train belonged to The 'Flying Scotsman'. (There is also a query about the location of the photograph. The photograph was titled as being at Carr Vale Station, but a 'Picture-the-Past' web-site user from Bolsover has pointed out that this does not look like Carr Vale Station because there seem to be too many lines. Indeed, after comparison with other Carr Vale Station pictures on the web-site, this point of observation seems to be correct. Carr Vale Station had a strap girder footbridge and two tracks running through it. It is not possible to see the Signal Box name on the photograph. Another well informed web-site railway enthusiast (Derby Industrial Museum Curator) has confirmed the location with the following information:-' The location of this photograph is in fact Shirebrook North station (SK5268). This was on the ex-Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway route between Lincoln and Chesterfield and was the junction for the same company's branch to Beighton (and thence via other companies lines to Sheffield). The station was known as 'Langwith Junction' until 1924 and closed to normal passenger services in 1955 on withdrawal of the residual service linking it with Lincoln, the section onwards to Chesterfield (Market Place) having closed (due to mining subsidence) in 1951 and the branch service to Sheffield in 1939. Thus, the Steam Locomotive Society's 'Great Central Rail Tour' is calling at an otherwise closed station, although it continued to be used for summer excursions (mainly taking the local mining population to the seaside), until 1965.') There is a very faintly seen badge on the front of the engine which says 'Great Central Rail Tour'. Other pictures of this engine can be seen at DCHQ001470 and DCHQ001654.
The Signal Box retained the name Langwith Jc. until closure. (Additional information kindly supplied by Vic Smith).
