Description: In the 1790's a canal, known as the Peak Forest, was built to enable minerals, particularly limestone quarried locally, to be carried down to the industrial area around Manchester. A dam was built across the lower part of the Combs valley, about a mile from the village, to provide the water to keep the canal full. As with the railway 90 years later, the building of the reservoir brought outside people to the village, and also generated work for locals.
