Description: Located on the east side of Heanor Road (in the foreground), some 150 yards south of the boundary with Shipley. Built in the early 19th century and closed on Thursday 9 June 1966 when a new pub of the same name opened on the adjacent site. The building in the picture was subsequently demolished. According to the Will of John Shorthose (b.1797-d.1877) of Church St, Cotmanhay, written in 1875, among his many properties in the area, he lists this pub which he bequeaths to his daughter daughter Sarah: 'dwelling house or Public House known by the sign of the 'Brick & Tile' with gardens and outbuildings situated in Cotmanhay now in the occupation of my son in law George Willoughby plus all those 7 dwelling houses with gardens and outbuildings thereto belonging situate near to or adjoining said public house now (1875) in the possession of:- Sarah Beer, John Byer, George Fretwell, Benjamin Fretwell, Thomas Thorpe, Joseph Booth, and John Hemsley...'
