Description: Calke Abbey was a baroque-style mansion built in 1701-3 on the site of a former Augustinian Monastery, in a beautifully landscaped park. Calke Abbey was the home of the Harpur family for over 300 years. The family, who were well known for their reclusive tendencies, made their fortune from the law in Elizabethan times. The house, which contains the family's spectacular natural history collection, has suffered little restoration and the 18th-century state bed and interiors that are essentially unchanged since the 1880s. This photograph of the saloon shows a portrait of Lady Frances Harpur and son Henry, wife and son of Sir Harry, the 6th Baronet. It was painted by Tilly Kettle in c 1766.
