Description: Bretby Hall, once home to the Earls of Chesterfield, was built during the reign of James I, on the site of a demolished 13th century castle. The present Hall was purchased in 1926 by the Derbyshire County Council for use as a hospital and remained an orthopaedic hospital till the 1990's, the hall and grounds then being sold to developers to provide private residential units. Philip Stanhope, the First Earl of Chesterfield has the artificial lakes made in the early 17th century.
