Description: St Matthew's Church dates to the Norman period and still has a nave from this period. The tower, chancel and north chapel were built later in the 14th-15th centuries. There are monuments and brasses to important local families like the Sacheverals and the Sitwells, including the tomb of John Sacheverell, who died at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Also of note is the carved tomb chest of Henry Sacheverell, who died in 1558, and his beautiful wife Katherine Babington. Much of the stained glass was taken from Dale Abbey during the Dissolution, and was restored and added to in 1847.
The image can be dated to pre-1897 as the Bateman Mausoleum next to the church has not yet been built. See DCBM400034 for a comparison.
