Description: Celebration arches like this were usually put up by towns whenever there was a visit by an important person, usually royalty, as an impressive welcome as their carriage passed through. The beautiful, arched, traceried east window of Sudbury Church (see DCHQ000172) was given by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in memory of George Edward Anson, brother of the then rector. Perhaps they visited and the arch was for them, or perhaps the arch was to commemorate one of Victoria's Jubilee's (1887 and 1897). The former suggestion is supported as more likely in that the picture has a connection with the church as it was donated by Lambeth Palace Library. The clothes suggest a date of c 1850-80. The banner on the arch says 'Health and Prosperity.
