Description: This view shows the opening ceremony on Saturday 23 June 1906, from the south east. The building was erected on part of a site known as 'Parkin's Field', off Sawley (later Tamworth) Road, known on an old map as Gozzams or Gorseholmes. The architects were Gorman and Ross of Long Eaton, the builders were J & J Warner of Littleover, their tender being for £2,747 17s 2d. The Mayfield and Norfolk Brook had to be diverted to accommodate the building, which was the first owned by Long Eaton Urban District Council, and had an initial stock of nearly 12,000 volumes, managed on the 'closed access' system. The first sod was turned was turned on 11 March 1905 by Enoch Wallis. The foundation stone was laid on Saturday 3rd June 1905 by Sir Walter Foster, and the opening ceremony on 23 June 1906 was performed by Lord Fitzmaurice.
