Description: This is a photograph of Ernest Terah Hooley. Born at Long Eaton in Derbyshire in 1859, Hooley was to be involved in the initial purchasing of the De Trafford Estate, which later became the Trafford Park Industrial Estate. He bought Trafford Park in 1896 for £360,000. He was a man not adverse to making money by any means, as is illustrated by this extract from page 1 of his book 'Hooley's Confessions': 'I have been branded as a swindler and a rouge, as a man who would stick at nothing to make money, and generally upon whom pity would be wasted. Be that as it may. If I had my time over again I would still live the same life, conscious that if I had done a certain amount of harm to my fellow-beings, at any rate I had also done a very considerable amount of good.' Amongst the things he did do was to be part of the creation or promotion of some well-known household names: Dunlop Tyre Company, Schweppes, Raleigh Cycles and Bovril. He also helped finance many other purchases of businesses and land, he would do this by using other people's money. This did gain him fantastic riches but it also landed him in jail twice for committing fraud. On one occasion, Hooley sold shares in a Siberian mine which he claimed was sponsored by the Tsar.
