Description: View looking north along Church Street towards Stanton Road. The Bluebell pub is on the left (proprietor at this time was J Glulow). The village Lock-up and pound is on the far right of the street, with Lawrence Street going off to the right in front of this. The Schools were built in 1878 at a cost of £2,800, including land, and were opened on Monday 2 December by W Smedley, Chairman of the School Board. The Architect was W Knight of Nottingham, and builders, F Lowe of Long Eaton. Furniture by Colman and Glendinning of Norwich and London. The initial capacity was 300 children, later increased to 500. As Sandiacre town grew, the school served as a junior school, until the school could no longer cope with the amount of post-war 'baby boom' children. There was an annex of the portacabin type on Elm Avenue, and all school dinners had to be taken in a converted chapel on Lenton Street, to which the children had to walk to, ushered along in a crocodile with the 'Dinner Ladies'. The school only had a small yard for recreation and no field for sports. In the late 1940's the school used what is now the Sandiacre Town F.C. ground on Stanton Road as playing field, complete with (disused and forbidden) half buried air raid shelters.
A new school was built in the late 1960's on Stanton Road, and the old Board School was demolished c 1970-1.
