Description: Celebration group photograph of Staff, Pupils, Councillors and School Governors for the 400 year Jubilee of the laying of the Foundation stone (1547) of the school. Showing Mr Kimmins the head master in his gown in the centre. The original school buildings stand in Church Street, opposite St Oswald's Church. The school was founded in 1585 by Sir Thomas Cockayne (whose coat of arms is over the door) during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It is no longer used as a school and its future is as yet undecided. The 'new' Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QUEGS) is on two sites - (Derby Old Road and Green Road). The name 'grammar' in the school's title dates back to when it was founded in 1548. (It became fully comprehensive in 1971. In 2002, the 1,200-pupil Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School topped the Independent league table for comprehensive schools)
