Description: All Saints Church is said to be one of the smallest in England (it measures 26ft by 25ft). The core of the structure which includes the church (left) and an attached house (right) is believed to have been the infirmary chapel and infirmary belonging to Dale Abbey. Prior to 1820 the house portion was a pub called the Blue Bell.
This view shows the northern elevation and is looking south-east. It depicts the church and house prior to their rebuilding in 1880-81 at which time the latter lost its thatched roof, and is a sketch derived from a photo taken by pioneering photographer Richard Keene of Derby. The artist was John Ward and the sketch was originally published in his Dale and Its Abbey (1891) and then in a souvenir brochure marking the coronation of King George V in 1911, which is when the overprinted caption was applied to the bottom right corner.
