Description: Looking south from the bridge carrying Ilkeston Road (A609). In the foreground is the partly removed Trowell Junction with the route to Nottingham via Radford diverging leftwards from the Erewash Valley main line. The latter, with its four tracks, continues southwards towards Toton and Trent. The hill in the right distance is the landscaped dirt tip of Stanton Works; in front of this was Stanton New Works where there were three blast furnaces until 1974.
Trowell Junction had been partly removed following damage caused by the derailment of a freight train on 1 September 1988. As can be seen here, the connections to the Up and Down Main lines were plainlined and this remained the case for 18 months until the junction was fully reinstated on 25 March 1990. The two points in the foreground on the Up and Down Goods lines are catch or trap points, designed to protect passenger trains to and from Nottingham by deflecting any conflicting movements on the Goods lines.
In 2007 Trowell Junction was remodelled and the connections to the Main lines were re-located north of the road bridge.
