Description: Looking north on the River Soar at the divergence of the navigable Old Cut from the river proper. The latter is the left-hand channel with the boom and beyond this is the large house known as The Hermitage. The river channel continues for some distance before cascading over Kegworth Weir, which once provided power for some plaster mills, now long-demolished. The Old Cut runs parallel and rejoins the river below the weir by means of Kegworth Deep Lock (No 56 in the Grand Union Canal sequence).
The River Soar Navigation is part canalised river and part canal and runs for 28 miles from just south of Leicester to the River Trent near Long Eaton. There are 21 locks.
