Description: Swarkestone Lock looking east towards Weston-on-Trent. Swarkestone Lock is No 5 on the Trent and Mersey Canal, which runs for 93.5 miles (150.5 km) from the River Trent at Derwent Mouth near Shardlow (Derbyshire) to Preston Brook in Cheshire (where it links with the Bridgwater Canal). It was engineered by James Brindley and opened in 1777. In this view hire boat 'The Stenson Bubble' is entering the lock, while the Stenson Junction-Trent railway line is visible in the right background; the overbridge carries the A514. Spring Farm sits atop the hill in the distance.
