Description: The back of the image reads:
"This view taken by flash bulb underground at Oakwood Grange Colliery was breaking the law, it was safe since there was virtually neither gas nor dust at that pit in the piper seam. This is a mother gate end showing the gate belt in foreground. Right benk drive unit on left and left benk unit (not clear) on right. The benks stretch to the left and right and seam height. The coal was undercut by coal cutter on night shift, blasted and filed off on days and conveyers adanced and belivered on the the gate belt. These men have just completed erecting the belts. The units are staked with pipes and fastened with sylvesters. The gate has been ripped (enlarged from seam hight) and rigs set on sliding stilts to allow for weighting."
