Description: An earth tremor hit Ilkeston on 11 February 1957 dislodging chimney pots in Brooke (formerly Brook) Street and this view shows local residents surveying the damage. On the right is Mrs Catherine Smith, of 16 Brooke Street, who was hurt on the leg by flying debris. She is actually standing outside No 45, the last house at the northern extremity of the street.
Subsequently, most of the terraced dwellings in Brooke Street were demolished and replaced by new houses and bungalows, with nearby Westwick Street being extended by means of an arc to make an end-on junction with Brooke Street at the point where the fence blocks the way in this picture. Today, these residents would have been standing on the corner of Brooke Street and Charles Close.
