Description: Station closed on 4 March 1963. although apparently not as part of the national railway 'Beeching cuts'. (Dr Richard Beeching, as chairman of British Rail, cut 5,000 miles of line and closed stations and depots all over the country). Other smaller stations on the ex-Great Central main line were closed at the same time, such as Chesterfield Central, Killamarsh Central and Renishaw Central.
This is Staveley Central station, not "Staveley station". No fewer than five stations had "Staveley" in their name at one time or another - Staveley Central, Staveley Town (250 yards along Lowgates from Staveley Central on another line), Staveley Works (the next stop from Staveley Central towards Chesterfield Central), Barrow Hill, which was for many years called just "Staveley" and there still is an open Staveley station today- on the Windermere branch in the Lake District. Beeching had a major impact on our railways, but the closure of Staveley Central was not down to him. It closed as stated, but his report wasn't published until three weeks later, on 27 March 1963.
