Description: Note the clothing worn by the women. They are wearing shawls and long skirts (which had last been 'fashionable' elsewhere in the 1890's!). Fashion was very slow to change in rural or northern 'working class' areas of the county, especially if worn by older ladies. Clothes were expensive, they were expected to last many years, and even when they had fallen to pieces and become unrepairable, they would be sold to the 'Rag and Bone' man who collected items from door-to-door, who would then pass them on to 'Rag-pickers' to salvage buttons and trimmings before converting them to rags.
