Description: The graves of 8 SAPPERS of ROYAL ENGINEERS from Weston Camp, as seen in Melbourne Cemetery. They were killed as the result of a lone German bombing attack over Melbourne early during the Second World War. 10 men were killed in total, when on 11 tb July 1940 after many of the night shift, housed in only temporary marquee quarters, in Melbourne had just gone to bed. On that fateful evening a low flying German aircraft dropped its bomb load on what was obviously a military camp, then disappeared. The marquee was hit killing 10 of the men. One had a lucky escape as shrapnel riddled the suitcase lodged under his low camp-bed, but he was completely unhurt.
