Description: Chesterfield Corporation tram No 11 (last but one of the initial batch of 12 cars supplied by Brush for the opening of the tramway in 1904) heading down Sheffield Road at Stonegravels with a service from Whittington Moor into Chesterfield. Lockoford Lane goes off to the right in front of the terrace of houses, while in the right background the pair of cottages partly covered in ivy are at the junction of Dark Lane (later Peveril Road) with Sheffield Road. On the horizon the terraced houses are in Nelson Street (which links the two aforementioned roads). The tram track at this point can be seen to be single but the stretch from Stonegravels to just north of Dark Lane was subsequently doubled in order to increase capacity. Chesterfield's electric tramway system was replaced by trolleybuses in 1927, these giving way to motor buses after only 11 years. Apart from the distant dwellings in Nelson Street all the buildings in this view were demolished many years ago and the scene is difficult to recognise today.
Picture the Past is grateful to John Cuttriss for clarifying the location of this picture. He also suggests the nearest terrace comprised back-to-back houses: 'The tram is shown in front of four properties which I think were 'Barrack Houses' because of the number of chimneys. I remember similar properties on Prospect Road, Old Whittington where two families lived in each unit, occupying front and back in each case'.
