Description: This view was taken after road improvements. Situated on the corner of Saltergate and Cavendish Street, the original 'Blue Bell lnn' is known to have dated back to the 1800s, the innkeeper for the period 1805-1817 being a Mrs. Rebecca Batteson. The original owner was the Duke of Devonshire. It was purchased by the Chesterfield Brewery Company from Hannah Eyre, of Penmore House, Hasland, and Hannah Wood, of Chesterfield, on 25th March 1886. The old building was demolished together with other property during the widening of Cavendish Street in 1936-37. This photograph shows the new stone building erected on the same site shortly afterwards, in the late 1930s.
